It is highly recommended not to hand your passport in the street of Thailand. There might be fake police asking your passport by showing a fake ID. It might not happen to everyone, but there are incidents where it happened. Once a fake police gets your passport it will be really tough to get the passport back from him. He might ask for a lot of money from you or even he might not give it back to you at all if he wants to manipulate the passport to come to the country you live.
